  • We are in a great spot for where we should be at this point.

The prop getting done last Saturday made quite a difference. We have been able to use them with practice. It makes things easier so that we don’t have to work backwards.

The students have been working incredibly hard. Everyone has seemed very up and positive.

During Marching band every student is considered varsity. This means the Freshmen have to keep up with the Seniors and that is a lot. The seniors have been saying great things about the Freshmen.

We have great staff this year. We hope you are hearing good things about them. They are young and talented. We have 6 world titled on our staff.

We are super excited for this year's show. It is fun to go to as many shows as you can as they will never look the same twice. All the way to the end we will be doing things to the show.

  • We still need lots of help. We are building 22 Giant Tombstones, a Giant Cast Iron Fence, and a big castle in the back that turns around to the inside. There are things to add to it.

  • The Uniforms team have been doing a great job. On Thursday 8/29 we are going to take a picture. It is a picture for the sports program for the fall. We will take a picture of the band, the colorguard and the drum line.

  • If you hear vocabulary you don’t understand, please ask. With time you will figure it out.

  • Wind Players are anyone who blows into their instrument. Then there is the drumline/percussionists. And then the colorguard. All wind players and percussionists will wear their uniforms with their shoes.  Everyone wears the same shoes.

  • If your student needs shoes we will order them and charge you $40.00. If they get lost or outgrown then we can order another pair and that will be an additional $40.00. Their name should be in the shoe. Shoes never go into the bag with the uniform.

  • Our website is: https://www.centuryband.org/  Our Calendar is on this website. Our schedule is very weird because ot times when we can get on the astroturf football field. When we are on the football field we can see them from above, we have microphones and we have lights there when it gets dark. It is the optimal practicing environment for us so we have prioritized that. Some practices are on the parking lot. This has disadvantages for us though. That said, it works. It was all we had for 16 years until we got the turf.

Patty is our secretary and she is the only way I communicate with parents.  This year our system sends out text messages. I will send Patty messages to send out. Then frequently the message will get put on the band app or team dunlop on Facebook. The band app is mostly for the students. We send lots of communication. Sometimes more than you need.

If you are not getting communication as we have already sent out lots, please let Patty know so we can get you into the system or try to figure out why you are not getting messages.

  • Attendance is very important. Missing only when really necessary. If they miss a practice they will be behind. We keep moving. If they miss a practice they need to get caught up before the next practice. That said we all have lives and sometimes things happen. If that is the case then they there are 2 ways we ask them to communicate: either the student can communicate or you can let us know. First to Mr. Dunlop (a text or phone call or email) and second to their section leader. Mr Dunlop can be reached at 503-319-1644, dunlopj@hsd.k12.or.us 2 Unexcused absence or 3 unexcused tardies or a combination of those then Mr. Dunlop will talk to them and give them a warning. If that doesn’t stop the unexcused absences that they will be called in and put on probation. Depending on the situation the probation could say that if it happens again they could get benched for the next competition or up to and including removal from the team. Removal hurts the team. We take this very seriously. We spent a lot of time on choreography, learning. We won’t just do it. There will be steps involved. Warning, Formal Probation in writing and then they didn’t improve so then the consequence of that is removal of a show.  Unexcused absence is they didn’t tell Mr. Dunlop and they didn’t tell their section leader. And it wasn’t a good reason. We take grades seriously and having to do homework is not an excuse. We try to be understanding.

If they are absent from school, unexcused, one class they are not allowed to practice. If they are absent from school at least half the day, even if excused, they are not allowed to practice. These are school rules.

  • Fees, we have added $25 to the fees and we have reworded the handbook so it is much clearer to understand. If you have an 8th grader we will always categorize them as Freshmen. We charge $750 per year for marching band. We have divided out the payments and the last 2 payments are due in April. The students can work off $150 of that by coming to fundraisers. If they do 10 fundraisers then we waive that part of the fee. For parents, you can also work off the $200 by volunteering. It takes a lot to run the band. If you volunteer 16 hours or more we will waive this fee also. Parent meetings do count towards this 16 hours. Many parents do more than 16 hours and we always appreciate that. More than 50% of our fees are for the staff. Wording we took out is there is no spring season or parade season.Statements will have all the fees on the statement. Per the handbook not all fees are due right away. $400 is due during fall season. There is a fee due schedule in the handbook. The student fees and parent fees are due in spring.

The school does charge a $150 activity fee. This is separate from the band.

We do not have scholarships but sometimes students can be put onto a work situation

where they have to work so many hours to work off the fees.

Colorguard is charged for their costume. This is an additional fee $125

  • We do have a winter season for Colorguard and Drumline. There are additional fees for this.

  • This year is a non-travel year for the Marching Band. Colorguard, Drumline and Jazz bands will be planning trips this year that cost additional money. More information on those soon. Jazz Band will be sending audition tapes to New York and St. Lewis. We won’t do both, just one. We will see who accepts us.

  • If you want to use money you earned from Hops or other fundraisers (pie sales flowers, ETC) that go to your account, you will need to let the Treasurer know. They will NOT automatically use this money to pay for things. You must tell them.

  • You keep track of your volunteer hours. We are working on a system to make this easier but for now you need to keep track of your hours. This is honor based. For students, we keep track. Every fundraiser we do, for example, can drives are 4 hours. Each time they work a shift they get a point. In December there is an all-nighter that they need 5 points to attend.

  • All new parents can get a buddy to help them navigate the system. Kristin Keezel has put this together. If you are new and want a buddy please contact her at: keezelkr@gmail.com

Volunteer Coordinator, Christina McCelland

  • She has forms to help you keep track of your hours. She also handed out the candy.

  • Reach out with any questions about volunteering. Thank you for showing up. So much already going on. Whatever you have done is significant.

  • Century Showcase is an all hands on deck. Circle your calendars October 26th. We need everyone to help to make it successful. We always make sure everyone can watch the competition.

  • Approval for HSD. To volunteer with students you must pass a background check check. It lives in the centuryband website and here is the link: Parent Information | Century High School Marching Band & Colorguard (centuryband.org) This must be done every 2 years.

  • All sign up genius will come through Patty. And it can usually be found on Team Dunlop on Facebook.

  • On Thursday 8/29 we will have a water balloon fight with the students.

  • September 7th  While the students are in practice we will be having work sessions, divided in shifts.

  • September 14th will be the parent preview. All hands on deck.

Treasurer, Jason Keezel

  • We covered fair share, volunteers, spring fee. I'll be here after the meeting if you have questions. We are also going to put out a loaner jacket fee. If they return it at the end of the year the cost comes off. If you haven’t been getting quick book invoices let me know because I have been sending them out. Please remember I’m not an accountant and still learning quick books. If I make a mistake let me know and we can work that out. Payments made by check or money order can be tracked cash cannot. Please do not send cash. Paying on-line does incur a credit card fee of 3%. Envelopes need to be properly address. Student name, reason for payment, date, amount ETC. If these are filled out correctly they envelope goes back to Mr. Dunlop who will give it to your student and it will be brought back to you. There are instructions on the lock box in the band room which is between the microwave and the sink. Checks need to be filled out correctly as well. They need to be written to Century Band Boosters. Memo line is helpful.

  • Money for Hops concessions, treasurers do not have control over these. They come in the mail from Hops. Once they are received it takes about a week to process them and get them into your account.

  • Receipt for approved purchases please fill out reimbursement form. It should be found on the website. This form should go into the lock box and write reimbursement on the envelope. The check will go to Mr. Dunlop and to your student then to you.

  • If you need to contact the treasurer please send an email.

Apparel Coordinator, Lisa Cavanaugh

  • Basic shirt orders, shirts and sweatshirts with band logo will go onto the webpage hopefully at the end of this week.

  • Later will have a show shirt which is specific to this years show.

  • Notices should go out to make you aware of this.

  • For colorguard shoes you will need to speak to Morgan.

  • Tall black socks are a must.

Fundraising, Christina Saribay

  • 3 big fundraising events.

  • We have already booked the auction venue which will be on April 26th, 2025. We need parents to help. We have a spreadsheet with a list of vendors we want donations from. If you are willing to help out let me know and we will send you a list of a few people and you can email that out. The more we fundraise the more we can do.

  • We are going to do the fun run again. We do not have a date yet but approx. the end of May beginning of June.

  • We also go out into the neighborhoods and play and people give donations. It has many names, every year it changes a little. Sometimes it is Turn on the Lights, Everything is Awesome or It’s a Small World. We don’t ask for donations but it is a big fundraiser.

  • Can Drives are really big for us. It is a lot of fun for us. There is an email if you have cans for pick up. cansforbands@centuryband.org

  • If you have any questions please feel free to to email me.
