Board Nominations, Parade Camp, Jazz Fest, Bandwidth Run, Auction,
Mr. Dunlop
I had a great day today at Sherwood with Wind Ensemble. We've already qualified for state. They took second place.
Thursday night 4/10/25 we have Chomp and Nathan's Senior project concert. It's going to be a spectacular concert. Come check it out. Nathan and the jazz band are going to play. The silver jazz band is opening. Nathan's father has a group that plays professionally in town and they are going to play and then one o'clock jazz band will play with Mr. Carr from Brown and Mr. Fotland from Hill Hi some of the people that have worked with Nathan. his grandfather's is also going to be there and they're going to do a couple things with the jazz band. Nathan, his dad and grandfather will play together and it's going to be super fun.
We are charging $10 for that as a fundraiser for the jazz band. This is to help kind of offset some jazz band expenses this year.
After the concert I will head over to CHOMP. They are on the same night as it was the night that all those people could do it. So we couldn't move it. I didn't want to cancel Chomp.
Friday is our Parade Camp at Camp Rilea, which is the camp at the beach. A packing list was sent out today. We're leaving Friday morning at 8.30.
7:30am - 8am please bring prescription medicine because it has to go to me and I have to be the one that keeps track of that. It's super important. Every single medicine has to have its own form. Every single bottle has to have the exact amount we will use while away and it has to be in the original bottle. You will need to keep additional pills at home. It is the students responsibility to go to Mr. Dunlop for their meds.
It's a physical event because it's a marching band camp. Students should bring clothes that they can move in and they can exercise in.
They need to bring a sack lunch for Friday. We will feed them all the rest of the meals.
We don't have a large enough ice chest so they shouldn’t bring something that needs to be kept cold.
We'll get back on Saturday, approximately 8pm.
The point of the camp is to work on parade stuff. More than 50% of the parade practices happen this weekend at camp. If you can’t attend the camp, you will need by the second practice, to be caught up or you won't get to do the parade. We're not going to spend practices trying to catch somebody up because they couldn't come to camp. It's not fair to the group.
We need the seniors, and I think it's a great way to finish strong and contribute to the group.
We have one giant sleeping area with bunks, cabin #1. I would bring a good sleeping bag because the mats will probably be uncomfortable.
Friday night we're going to do ground beef and gravy on a bed of mashed potatoes with a dinner roll with asparagus on the side and then we will have dessert with that too.
For breakfast we will do breakfast burritos. I'm still debating between sausage or chorizo and fruit and things. Saturday lunch Chris is coming and she's probably going to do a spaghetti lunch meal and then Saturday dinner is a grab and go bag.
Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival is 4/16-19/25. What I need right away is the students to sign up for a hotel room by tomorrow when school starts, which is because we're on a special schedule tomorrow for activity.
We're on the bus all day Wednesday, Thursday we'll be at the competition. all day. Friday we compete all day. Friday night is the big concert where hopefully we get one or two people up on the stage for that. We drive home all day Saturday. We will either feed them or give them money depending on where we are. All the breakfast will be together and we'll have pizza one night. . It's a jazz thing with the same dress code that we're used to. We will be staying at: Hotel/Address: Best Western Plus Inn Hells Canyon
1395 Bridge St Clarkston, WA 99403
(509) 295-8215.
It is not the closest hotel to where the festival is. If you're not on the chaperone list I didn't get you a room.
For the concert night, Friday night, the stadium has a clear bag only policy. If you want to take something in it has to be in a clear bag.
Big kudos if you were here to watch The Guard and Drumline last night I thought they did a great job. It was a great season all the way around. All four shows were fabulous and the students worked really hard.
Parade practices were published on the calendar, all at Century. There are only 4 practices. 4/29 and 5/6 both from 6:00pm-8:00pm 5/22 and 6/5 both from 4:00pm-7:00pm.
We have the St. John's Parade, which is the May 10th and it starts at noon. We will probably be back about 3. I'll send more information when I find out where we are in the parade.
The Rose Parade, and the Fourth of July Parade.
For the 4th of July Parade we will say if you are in town we need your student to attend. If you are out of town we understand. What we don’t want is for your student to just stay home that day because we do need them and as always the graduating Seniors are invited to join us. We love to have them participate with us.
We do not charge the kids to go to parade camp. It is part of what we do, it is part of what being in the band is, and it is included in the fair share. Whether they do it or not, they get charged the same. It's in the handbook that we've gone through, we've talked about it, I've talked about it with the kids, etc.
Senior parents, we are at that point where we have given any balance you owe to the school bookkeeper, so that they can help us with that piece of it.
As for our trip next year, we want to take a pause. We want to get a date out there and what we're going to do as early as we can, but right now there's just a lot of uncertainty on all sides. We will figure it out and we want to encourage you to start saving as it is a big band trip. We are going to try to cap the trip at $3000.00. It will be between $1,000 and 3,000. We are not 100% anywhere and we want to make sure everyone feels good about where we are going.
Fundraising
Flower Baskets are on sale now. They are beautiful. There's four different types, 2 sizes big and small and 2 types shaded and sun loving. They generally last until October. We will get them just in time for Mother’s Day. This year there is also a gift card option. This is an individual fundraiser so if you sell them most of the profit goes into your students account.
We have canceled the April Can Drive. We will have one in May and we have added one June 14th.
We are currently working on the website for the Bandwidth run. We hope to have that up and running in the next couple of weeks so you can get tickets for that. South Hillsboro has grown immensely since last year. There's a lot more going on, a lot more houses, so it's going to be big, fun and fantastic. If you don't run but you want to help, there's a ton of new businesses coming in over there so if anybody wants to go over with me and go talk to a bunch of businesses and make friends with our new neighbors, then let's do it. Just let me know if you want to help.
I have submitted quite a while ago to the Guinness Book of World Records. I put the category out there because that category does not exist. I am waiting for a board to approve it. I keep checking and trying to get it expedited to get us approved for the One More Time Around Band, a thousand people playing Louie Louie at one time. We are getting Peter, who's the only Kingsman that's still alive. They're working on trying to get some of the other Kingsman's children to come play with us as well. This is a Rose Festival event. We are part of the Rose Festival big event that goes out there. Channel 12, Fox News is going to come out and video us. If you guys play an instrument, dust it off, bring it out there, come play and get us a certificate, hopefully I'll get us a certificate for the Guinness Book of World Records. We are charging $15.00 per person and we'll have food and stuff like that for you to buy and hang out. We did it last year. It was a lot of fun but we want to go even bigger and we want to do a thousand because we're Century, that's one thousand. So that's why I came up with that number.
June 1st, Blue Ox Axe, We've got a hundred spots for us to go and throw axes
May 1st, we will begin the sign up for this event. We're going to have a little competition. It's a great way to have fun. Get to know all of our parents.
Heather and a big team of us moms have been meeting since August. We meet every Sunday at 10 o'clock in the morning. We've got about $15,000 worth of donations now that people have donated to us. We are auctioning off our skeletons from our fall show. One of them is brand new. The Jazz auction tickets are on sale. For $15.00 extra dollars you can purchase 2 drink tickets. We also have sponsor tickets right now. We've got some games planned and we've got some professional swing dancers coming in. So we get to learn how to dance too. It's going to be a lot of fun. It is at Hidden Creek in Hillsboro. We have one of our band parents that is cooking our New Orleans style dinner.
We are going to need some OLCC volunteers for the auction. If you have your OLCC and you're willing to volunteer for like an hour come talk to me. Or you can message me. My email is auction@centuryband.org. Student raffle baskets are due this Thursday. We will be picking them up that day. Please get on your students about the basket and make sure that they're turned in. And if you have any donations other than the raffle baskets you'd like to donate, you can also message me as well. They just bring it to school. Their section leader should be putting the basket together for them. They give it to their section leader or whoever is intended to take care of their basket. Once the basket is done, they drop them off in the mini-lab and I pick them up. And 100% non-alcoholic. There is no alcohol in the student baskets.
We need a parent to help out with Cans for Bands. If somebody that can take over the email. It's people in the community that lets us know, I got some cans, can you come pick them up?
So there are people that do that all month long and we go pick them up and we save them in the back of the train. We actually do get quite a bit of cans from neighboring people that are in the community. we just need somebody to take over that account. It needs to be checked regularly. If we don't get this covered, people will stop using it. Also it doesn't have to be one person. If somebody wants to manage the email and get some parents that are available, during the day they can send multiple people out to go pick those cans up, they just need to coordinate that. We need a way to get these cans picked up immediately when people let us know.
We make about $30,000 on our cans each year. It is a big fundraiser and it does help us do all the things that we love and helps support our kids.
Volunteer Coordinator
Volunteering hours thank you, thank you.. March google form was sent out collecting all the hours. 5,855.3 hours of everyone that's contributed. A huge, huge thank you to every single one of you. As they get submitted, I'm still working on finishing up sending the latest things to Jason. He clears the accounts for those different fees as they come in. The April Google Form will go out at the end of the month, so just keep tabulating and listing. A reminder for employee match programs, Intel recently changed their format. You have to record within 60 days if you're an Intel employee. There's a max amount of $1,000 since January 1. You have to list a specific day, task and time. So using a simple table date, list what you did in the hours works great for that. You also have to list a volunteer coordinator as your reference. So that's me. I would be your reference, and I have my email and phone number and contact. They're welcome to call me, and I can verify. But you would enter this. You could hand me the paper. You could take a picture of it. You could submit it. it in a detailed however it is but I will help support you because the band gets those hours.
Nike does it and US Bank and other companies may do this as well. You could ask your employer. You can link your Fred Meyer card to the band and we can get money. They don't give us any money back but at least the band gets money. Whatever those checks are each month it's all helping.
We will have an upcoming meeting for incoming 8th grade students. We don't have a date yet, but we do want to keep sharing the information. We want to have band buddies like we started last year. If you're interested in being a buddy, let me know. You can talk to Kristen, it is a great way to connect with new parents. There is so much information to take in and learn and having someone that's done the ropes, knows what they're doing, can be really helpful along the way.
Current sign ups of upcoming things. You've seen the sound lab monitor. There's a couple of you that have done it. That's one during the day. It's at two o'clock on B days, eighth period. That is the one that just needs one person.
We have parade camp. There's still space for chaperones.
We're going to have a spring equipment work party, to be announced. I think after we're done with parade camp, we need to go through all the supplies.
Parade practices. I will group those probably in two blocks, or it might just be the week of, because we're going to use four to five people to help walk, block traffic, pull, possibly a wagon with water to the first day just in case. I've pulled an amp before or pushed a student in a wheelchair who was playing their instrument. So we'll use some parents to help support that, and it can be different ones because that gets us all ready for parade season, but I need at least four to five.
The walk, play, spin night is coming. On May 2nd. That's where the students go around the neighborhood. They don't need a ton of us, but we will need like four or five. We're gonna do a pizza dinner. Cost is $3..
Wind ensemble and I know there'll be jazz things. They're making both state wind and state jazz. So that'll be coming up.
St. John's parade will need people and the Rose parade.
The Fireworks booth. If you are interested in and passionate about things blowing up or selling things that blow up, we could use you as a person to help coordinate. They will start organizing the meetings in June. I would help support you with the signups. If you're like fireworks person and you're around, and then we'll need helpers for 4th of July parade,
The can drive is May 3rd. I don't know if that date was out there.
May 15th the parent volunteer hours are due.
Treasurer
If you have a senior, check your student credit link that I sent you. Use those funds or they go to the general scholarship fund.
Also, if you have a senior, check to see if you have balances due. It's currently with the bookkeeper. Those invoices or notices will be going out shortly.
Send me an email. I can tell you what you owe and if you have any credits.
The information from Christina McClelland for volunteer hours gets added as soon as I get it. So that will be taken off your account. If you notice all of a sudden you owe $200 less or $125 less, that's why.
Amanda does a great job in saying it's not me, go talk to the band treasurer. So, she does a really good job in deflecting. The senior parents should be aware of the bill prior to receiving the notice in the mail.
President
We need to nominate board positions. All positions are available. The President position will be available since this is my last year. No one has said they are stepping down. Also the Assistant Treasurer position is potentially open. All positions are available to be applied for.
Christina Saribay has been nominated for the President position. Which opens the Fundraiser position. Heather Buxton was nominated for the Fundraising position. The nominating is open until April 29th. If you are interested in running for any position please send an email to secretary@centuryband.org. If there is more than one person running for a position we will ask that you submit a little note about yourself.
