  • The handbook goes over all of our rules and regulations. It talks about what are the curricular classes that are required for band. We've got... concert band, symphonic band, wind ensemble, percussion class, AP music.

  • We have so many different opportunities for our students to try different things and be a part of different groups.

  • The only one that they have to try out for is wind ensemble. We went to state this year and did an amazing job.

  • You'll have all the key performances for Winter Guard, for Winter Percussion, for the Fall Shows. There's so much that goes on. I know this is a lot of overwhelming information, but we're going to get you through this every step of the way.

  • Practices and attendance. So practices are required.  If you're here for half of the day, you can still come to practice. But if you are sick or out of school all day you can not go to practice.

  • Fair shares are how we pay for the things that go into running this band. The fee is $750 a year and it's broken out into five payments. The first payment is $150, due in August. 2nd payment is  $125, due in September. 3rd payment of $125, due in October. And then there's nothing due until April and May.

  • In April, that's for students $150, but it can be waived if your students attend the fundraisers. And they do all the fundraisers to help us run this band..

  • There is also $200 for parents that you can get waived by simply volunteering. We would rather you guys volunteer 16 hours than pay us. Your students seeing you here and participating and just being involved is very important. So volunteer, it's fun.

  • Every student will have $45 for their marching shoes. We all wear the same marching shoes.

  • There are some additional fees. Costume fees for the Colorguard in Fall and again in Winter.

  • Sometimes there's extra additional fees if they have to wear special shoes or belts, etc.

  • There's a $150 activity fee and that is set by the Hillsboro School District that is separate from the Band.

  • How to pay? We have this great little silver box in the band room. You can either pay your fair shares online through the invoice or if you don't wanna pay the extra 3% charge that you can do for credit cards, then you can write a check. We do not take cash. Write a check over here to the band and it has instructions of what it needs to be. If you pay by check the envelope needs information on it. Such as your students name, what the payment is for. Also it is good to have this information on your check also. Then that goes into the box and Jason will pick it up and get it credited to your account.

  • We have a Travel / Medical form you will need to fill out each year your student participates in Band. As a general rule we only have to fill it out one time per year. This form will give up all important information we need. We do like for you to let us know if something changes with your student. We will have you fill this out once Band camp begins. If this doesn’t get filled out your student will not be able to travel with us and perform.

  • It is really important that you guys get us any food allergies that your students have Because when we are cooking for 150 kids, if we have someone that is highly allergic to a certain food or celiac we take that very seriously and we need to know that because we don't want to be out at a field show and having a kid that has celiac and I don't have anything gluten-free. It's very important that we are able to feed our kids with the right food. This is a question on the form.

  • You will hear about passing off.  What's passing off?  In our fall season, we have several movements of music for our fall show. The students have to pass off each movement. It can be between five to six movements. The pass off will be with a coach or captain.

  • What are sectionals? That's where the section leaders spend some time and work with your students to get them to learn their marching, their drills, their dots, their music, because they have to pass off all of their movements before championships. Sectionals are required. Sectionals are supposed to be communicated early. They're only supposed to be 30 to 40 minutes. Only once a week.

  • We actually have three seasons. Fall season is the third week of August to the first of November. Our second season is Winter with Winter percussion and Winterguard. That usually starts with tryouts in November. They start practicing in December and that one goes all the way until April. Winter season does have a separate Fair share cost. Winter is an extra activity. Our third and final season is our parade season.

  • Marching band is by far our most social and our most leadership leg of our thing because our seniors are on the same team with the eighth graders. I always like to tell them that everybody's on varsity playing every minute of the game.

  • It's critical that our eighth graders can play well. So we are very vested in making sure that they get the tools that they need to be successful. We have found a little bit of extra time with just that group helps a lot.

  • I highly recommend getting them a coach, if you can do some private lessons with coaching it will get them further along. Or extra practice times with their section leaders whatever they can do. This first year it is a lot. They're learning how to play their music and move at the same time and run across the field.

Mr. Dunlop

  • In the fall we practice around the dates we can use the stadium because we rehearse in the evenings and we need the lights. We haven’t been given the dates yet that we can use the stadium (I will be meeting with them to work out those details)

  • Wednesday will be our primary night because that is the night we can get the turf most every week. Then we will pick a 2nd night depending on when it is open. That said, we will get the calendar updated in the next week and a half or so. We're very good about sending that stuff out.

  • Band and Colorguard  Calendar: Calendar | Century High School Marching Band & Colorguard

  • We're also very good about sticking to our schedule. And ask the same from you.

  • Missing band camp puts your student into an environment where they won’t be able to perform because of having to play catch up. Band camp, which is before school starts, is one-third of our practices for the whole season.

  • The hardest part of practicing is stopping everything else, getting your instrument and your music out and starting. What I have found is most kids who will do that five times a week will practice more if they need to. What I tell them, five days a week, ten minutes a day.

Fundraising

  • Heather Buxton is our new fundraising VP for the band and we've got lots of exciting things.

  • This is how your student can work off $150 of their fair sharers and they have all the way until April, and there are plenty of opportunities to get their points in.

  • It's really fun. It's easy. They need five points to go to the all-night winter party.

  • On the last day of school, before Winter break, the band is the only students that take over Century High School and we have so much fun. It is an all-nighter. There are plays, there are skits, there are all kinds of events that go on. You cannot buy the points. They have to earn those points. If you get 10 points or more, your fair share waived. You save $150.

  • June 14th is when you can start earning points for next year. That is our first can drive for next year. The can drive is from 9am - 1pm. Can drives are super fun. The can drive is worth a point for students and parents who participate will earn volunteer time.

  • We do not let any of the freshmen go alone. They go with older students, a veteran student that has done this a lot. We raise between $20,000 to $30,000 a year just by getting donations for cans. If you have friends or neighbors that want us to pick up cans, they can email cans4bands@century.org I have a team that will go pick up cans. I picked up 28 bags of cans last week.. It is a great thing.

  • We are planning can drives for July and August. There will be more details for those coming.

  • There's only two events where you can actually get two points for one event. The first one is the fireworks stand. Fireworks stand is going to start approximately the 24th of June although they've never been on time.  So fireworks is the time that you can get two points. So you are allowed to work two shifts. They are four-hour shifts. And it's during the weeks, approximately June 24 through the 4th of July.

  • The other one is called the Jazz auction. We just had our jazz auction here in April. That was a big one. That one, you can earn a fundraiser point for contributing to your section's basket and then you can get a point for working the event.

  • That's the only two that you can get two points for.

  • We will have a 5K Fun Run, and that will be on September 20th. That is called the Bandwidth. And that's where you do a 5K run over in South Hillsboro and at different destinations, we've got bands playing music.

  • We have fundraising for the band and then there's money makers that puts money into  your student accounts.

  • We've got a pie sales, where 80% of what your student sells  goes into the student's account, 20% goes to the band.

  • We have selling spaces for the ads for our showcase and for the bandwidth. So if you guys get sponsors or people that buy into that, a portion of that goes into your students account. The showcase actually brings in the most money into your accounts.

  • We've got flower sales around Mother's Day and then we've got Hop's games.

Elizabeth Martinez

  • Elizabeth, who is our Hops specialist is here to talk about what is Hops.

  • We work in sessions at the Hops games from opening day in April until closing day in August.

  • In 2026, their new stadium is opening and they will have more opportunities for other things like concerts. They also do OSA games, but those are worth volunteer points only.

  • For the Hops games, we actually get about $12 an hour, a little bit more than that, plus tips. And it's generally 5.5 to 6 hours where you're selling hot dogs or nachos or pretzels, or whatever, and it's a good time.

  • I see a lot of faces here who I’ve worked with and when we all work together we get to know each other we get to know each other's kids. We work with a lot of the kids as well because anybody 16 or over can work if they have a food handlers card. Food handlers card website: Oregon Food Handlers Card If you are 18 or older and you get your OLCC card as well you can work the register, sell beer, stuff like that. OLCC website: Oregon OLCC Alcohol Server Certificate | Online Training

  • We have a good time and it makes approximately $135 per shift, per person. I have families who have had three people and they make $135 that's $500 right there and this year every year you're going to want to make this money because it will go into your account as a credit you can pay your fair share you can pay for the trip.

  • You can pay for a kid's costume. You can pay for all of the things that happen. We may only pay one activity fee, but we have so many things going on. We don't want this to be a burden for you. And it is hard work, but it's fun. And you get to know people, and you get money in your account.

  • You want to start now. We only have only have August left. If you want to sign up, text me 503-453-9341 or you can email me at concessions@centuryband.org. I will send you the information. I'll send you an FAQ. I will send you the sign up, genius.

  • You can sign up, you and kids over 16. A lot of you are new, so a lot of you won't have 16-year-olds. If you have older kids, they can do it, too. You don't need a background check for this, because this is out in public, out in the open.

Communication

  • Patty is the official you may see the communication in different places. Just know that everything you need will be sent by Patty. You will get either an email or a text message through CutTime. CutTime is how Patty gets all the information out to you and more importantly, what Mr. Dunlop wants to get out to you. It is really important to get set up in CutTimet.

  • We've got so many different avenues of communication.

  • We have an app called Band App, easy, Band App. And this is how we communicate with the kids, with the parents, what's going on.

  • If you want to download the band app to your phone It looks like this:

  • On Facebook we have Team Dunlop (FYI Mr. Dunlop doesn’t have or use Facebook so never leave a message for him there. He won’t see it.)

  • The Century Band Instagram account is run by the students and also Team Dunlop on Facebook. It also has alumni on there.

Prop Building

  • You can get your volunteer hours helping us build props for our fall season show. Last fall we built a haunted mansion. We had a full graveyard. We walking skeletons that were on top of children out on our field.

  • If you don't know how to build a prop, just come on out and we will show you. Our past president taught me how to use the saw, the cutting blade, the drill. It's very empowering. It's so much fun. I can do all the tools now. I'm not afraid. I was just like, show me how to do it.

  • We just work for a couple of hours while the kids are out practicing.

Volunteering

  • If you have a crazy schedule, and you can't go to the shows, and you can't build props, and you, just can't be here. We've had parents that are like, I'll wash the dishes and bring them back.

  • You wash band uniforms. You need either a front loader washing machine or a top loader if it doesn’t have an agitator in it. We provide the special soap to use.

Buddy System

  • You are going to be paired up with a buddy this year,  veteran parents who have navigated the system and figured it out. They will help you figure things out. If you are interested in participating (either as a veteran or newcomer) please fill out this form.

Christina McClelland, Volunteer Coordinator

  • To volunteer you will need to fill out a volunteer application criminal history form, followed by a fingerprinting. That is the slowest part of this system, is the fingerprinting can take sometimes up to four or five weeks and last fall to get back. Here is the link to get that started. HSD Volunteer Application Once you are approved I need you to take a screenshot of your approved status and send to me at  volunteers@centuryband.org Please make sure that in the screenshot I can see the Hillsboro school district label.

  • There will be communication. There's a band calendar. That band calendar is excellent to be checking out to see what's happening. Patty updates that frequently.

  • When I send out an email, I'm sharing, here's what's happening this week. Here's the signup that you can do. So I use signup genius.

  • We just want to help engage you with our group. And it's a lot of fun, as they've been talking about. And there's a list of all different sorts of ways you can be involved. You can ask me questions.

  • We do track our hours throughout the year. I send out a Google form to collect those, because it's self-reported.

  • There is corporate matching with some companies. Examples, Intel, Nike, Chase Band, US Bank to name a few. If you have a corporate matching, that's awesome as well.

  • I know it's a lot of info, but my key thing is just come away with. Please get your volunteer status ready so you can be a chaperone, so you can do the fun things, you can help with uniforms, you can serve food..

  • The required hours for the marching season is 16 hours.

  • The other part too is the Century Showcase, which will be in October, we need everyone to help, from parking attendants to check-in booths to runners for the judges. So many things to do and it is an all hands on deck situation. We need people at the gates, people doing tickets.

2026 Trip

  • We are going on a big trip this year. In April of 2026, block your calendar for April 8th through the 15th we are taking the band to Orlando, Florida.

  • We will be doing a competition. We will be doing some parades. We'll be doing some clinics. At both Universal Studios and Disney, Disney World also. We're gonna go to the Kennedy Space Center. .

  • I am currently really trying to get a better quote for us. I like the quote that I have, I like the payment, it's comparable to when a couple years ago we took the band to Hawaii. So it's a good price, I feel like we can get a better price, So that's why I don't have that information yet. I told the people that are working with me that I need something by tomorrow so that I can have it rolled out at the parent meeting next Tuesday with the first payment, deposit, things like that.

  • We do need parent chaperones by that I mean it's really just kind of keeping an eye on students when they are at the pool, and you kind of sign up for a shift. We do groups at the airport. This is most important. So that is coming, that is why things like the fundraisers, the hops is important. Again, I don't know the full price of the trip. We're trying to push for $2,500.

  • We're hoping to fly out as a red-eye on the 8th so they would only miss the 9th of school, and then they would miss the following Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday.

  • Our payments are non-refundable because once we start, we're buying plane tickets, probably in the the next two weeks. We're booking hotels. It is a commitment if you're in or if you're not. We also can't usually add people in. Airline tickets are a great example. We get a big good deal usually the first time and I will say sometimes you can buy cheaper airplane tickets on your own but we have a specific time that we need to go all together then going can we add somebody it's usually like for Hawaii last time was almost $800 to add somebody because the airline tickets that got crazy because if you know how those algorithms were the second they see that a hundred and twenty tickets are gone for that you know that day the prices just go crazy.

  • It will be really important that we get that count. There's kind of some price brackets. There will be somewhat of like a registration it's like doing a Google form, you're officially signing up for the trip, here's my information,, here's what my ID says, here's my student, I agreed to pay the full amount,

  • We rotate trips. So the disadvantage for you is that this is the big trip year, and there won't be another one if your kids are freshmen while they're here. The next year will be a small trip year. Then a medium trip year like Victoria, or that is Spokane, so it'll be something smaller. And then we'll have another off trip year, and then another big trip year. It's a good in that you don't have to think you're saving up all that every time. It's a bad because your kids fall into that rotation and have to jump off with a big trip.

  • As I said  we do rotate those. It's not like you're only there in a winter group while they're here. That said, the marching band usually takes an overnight trip, like, we're going to go to Grants Pass. We sleep on the gym floor. We have a big competition, and then we drive home. It's fun because we're together, and the kids like to do that, it's part of their fair share. It is not an extra cost. So we do do some stuff like that, but that's absorbed into what we charge them for the season.
